If, despite your best efforts, you find yourself at odds with one of your colleagues, try to solve the problem informally, without involving other managers. Here are some guidelines to assist you.
Make the First Move
There's a good chance the other person is even less comfortable
than you are with the situation and will welcome your gesture
of peace.
Choose the Right Time
Try to schedule a sit-down conversation at a calm time when
you're least likely to be interrupted perhaps at the
end of the day.
Adopt a Conciliatory Stance
Keep in mind the purpose of this meeting is to resolve conflict,
not to vent your feelings.
Take Corrective Action
If accountability for a misunderstanding or mishap lies
with you, acknowledge your part and take immediate action
to remedy the situation. For example, if you inadvertently
took credit for a collaborative effort, let your supervisor
know of your coworker's contributions right away.
Sound Alarms if It's Serious
In the rare instance in which you suspect your coworker
may be dangerous or engaging in illegal activity, immediately
alert senior management and the proper officials within
your legal and human resources departments.
Often, communication breakdowns in the office stem from minor
misunderstandings that can be resolved fairly easily. By approaching
each problem with care, you'll help create a positive, friendly
work environment. |
